ayurveda / holistic nutrition
Constitutional Assessment (90min) includes 30min intro, one-hour consultation and a Life-Diet Plan. Life Improvement Plan includes four one-hour sessions, scheduled check-ins, and a Life-Diet Plan for each season of the year. Kitchari Session (two hours) includes Constitutional Assessment and guided, hands-on demo-instruction on preparing - and enjoying! - an Ayurvedic meal.
Ayurveda, a 5,000-year-old system of medicine, approaches well-being in a truly holistic way: it takes all aspects of the body, mind, and spirit into consideration, and in addition, it accounts for the individual needs of each person. Life-Diet Plans are based on the four pillars of nutrition -- diet, exercise, sleep/meditation, and pranayama or breathing practices -- and focus on healing through all five senses, providing a personalized and comprehensive guide based on one's unique 'dosha', or constitution.
In Sanskrit, 'ayurveda' translates as "knowledge of longevity" and is also known as the "science of life". The same sages who brought us yoga were aware that the whole self needs to be healthy if one is to lead a good life and reach enlightenment -- indeed, it takes strength to sit in meditation for hours at a time! But even for those of us not seeking this ultimate samadhi, we all benefit from a clearer understanding of what supports our well-being, and what leads us into dis-ease. Whether the goal is to lose weight, alleviate certain health conditions, or simply to feel better overall, Ayurveda can provide the answer. An Ayurvedic Life-Diet Plan will serve as a tailor-made guide to good nutrition, exercise that's right for your body, and other practices according to who you are, and *where* you are in life.
energy work (reiki, chakras, & more)
REIKI As my teacher Darcy Skye puts it, "Reiki is a gentle hands-on-healing modality centered around channeling universal life force energy in the form of love." It can be practiced without touching the body or the skin, and even from a distance. When stress and emotions throw you off-kilter, Reiki treatments can help bring balance back to the subtle energetic layer of your body, thereby helping you feel calmer, lighter, or more grounded.
ENERGY-BALANCE / CHAKRA-BALANCE The chakras are energy centers in the body; there are seven major chakra that live along the spine, spinning like wheels to take in our sensory experience and to churn out our mental, emotional, and physical responses. Each chakra is associated with a different endocrine gland, and an aspect of our psyche (the major chakras are often compared to Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs). When a chakra is off-balance, it can make us feel mentally disturbed or physically unwell, and can affect the other chakras as well. Using methods such as meditation and visualization, chanting and breathing, we can access our chakras and help restore them to their natural, balanced state.
AYURVEDIC OIL TREATMENT An Ayurvedic "face-lift" is like a holistic facial which makes lines, sagging, and discoloration seem to disappear. Specific oils can also help clear out the sinuses and alleviate headaches. (Soon I will also offer Shirodhara treatments, another form of Ayurvedic oil treatment for the face and neck.)
YOGIC STRETCHING / ENERGY-WORK (Thai Yoga) In 2015 I completed the Lotus Palm Level I Thai Yoga Massage program. However, because I am not registered as a massage therapist in NY state, I cannot call this a massage. As a yoga teacher I can call it yogic stretching, or energy-work as a Reiki practitioner; both terms begin to describe the effects of these techniques, which are like passive yoga poses that stretch and compress the physical body, and help to move and circulate energy. You'll have to experience it to know for yourself!

Drawing on both Hatha and Vinyasa traditions, asana classes provide an opportunity to fully explore each posture - experiencing the asana on an energetic, as well as physical level. A slower pace is offered for beginners and those who wish to deepen their understanding of yoga, bringing it all together into a flowing sequence as desired. Classes are held in a private space in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, or in your own home (other spaces could be worked out as available).
Prana or Chakra Yoga classes incorporate the seven chakra, or main energy centers of the body. This style is ideal for healing and balancing the physical, mental, spiritual and emotional layers of the self. The focus on alignment is helpful to new students, and an increased awareness of the breath and the flow of prana or life-force energy through the body is a great experience for practitioners at any level.
All yoga classes include pranayama and meditation, and last about 90 minutes (one hour and two hour sessions also available). They are ideal for people brand-new to yoga as well as experienced practitioners, and will support your personal practice. Private and small group classes help students gain knowledge of terms and concepts, as well as modifications that are right for them, helping to relieve anxiety or confusion that may arise in large studio classes. Workshops are a great way for groups of friends, yoga studios (teachers as well as students!), and employees to learn more about concepts ranging from physical health to a focused mind and balanced spirit. Whether as a single two-hour session, a half or full day, or a weekly or monthly series, these educational workshops are part lecture, part discussion, part hands-on experiential - and all fun!
Topics include: AYURVEDA Discover the ancient art of health maintenance and disease prevention, developed in India thousands of years ago and still used today. Can include discussion of the digestive system, a primary focus of Ayurvedic nutrition. BEGINNERS YOGA Break down a sequence or even a posture into easy-to-grasp parts and feel more comfortable in studio classes. THE CHAKRA SYSTEM Learn about the seven main energy centers of the body and how they relate to anatomical and physiological systems and conditions on a physical level, as well as different emotions and mental states. PRANA/CHAKRA YOGA Incorporate the chakra system into asana practice through bij mantra (sounds), pranayama (breath), and dharana (focus), for healing and balancing. SEASONAL/HOLISTIC/AYURVEDIC NUTRITION Based on the five-element, five-sense approach to wellness, this unique perspective on nutrition serves as a timeless guide to being aware of how to eat right for different constitutions (body types), seasons of the year, and even the different times of day! By understanding one's own self, appropriate food choices and other habits become easier to identify and incorporate into your daily life. VEDIC / YOGIC PHILOSOPHY Explore the concepts behind the practices, including the Vedic perspective on the origins of the universe, human development, and our connections with that which is on the other side of our skin.
